Excursion “Art Nouveau” in Riga – lasting about three hours, introduces you to the architecture and history of Riga. You will get acquainted with the works of the great architects of the past. One of the most famous architects in Riga was Mikhail Eisenstein.
Jugend style originated in the late 19th, early 20th century. Jugendstil, or Art Nouveau – is the German version of Art Nouveau.
Speaking of Riga, the local is usually used the term “Art Nouveau” and not “modern”. Art Nouveau is one of the branches of the Art Nouveau style, its German variety. Translated from the German Jugendstil means “young style”. It got its name from the popular German magazine “Jugend” (“Youth”), which began to be published in Germany in 1896
From 1902 till 1914 all Riga architects used techniques in his work modern and, of course, its decorative forms. The building of the Riga this time is almost impossible to find a structure that somehow not revealed the style of Art Nouveau. This applies even to those buildings, which are created in the spirit of other concepts.
Art Nouveau combines simple geometric lines and shapes. The architects sought to make the most decorative facade elements: stylized ornaments, garlands of flowers, sculptures of various animals, statues of women, winding bindings fencing balconies and stairs, the appearance of persons. The facade of buildings in the style of Art Nouveau can be seen even on the host and the history of the house.
One of the most prominent architect in Riga was Mikhail Eisenstein, who worked in the Baltic state property management, and privately studied architecture. According to his son Sergei, a famous film director, Mikhail Eisenstein built about 53 houses in the style of Art Nouveau.
